York College, founded in 1966, is a center of academic excellence in the heart of Jamaica, Queens. York’s academic programs are housed in three schools: The School of Arts & Sciences, The School of Business and Information Systems, and The School of Health Sciences and Professional Studies. Over sixty baccalaureate programs from across a variety of disciplines, including accounting, aviation management, business, computer science, journalism, social work, teacher education, a dual BS/MS degree in Occupational Therapy, and one of the top-ranked nursing programs in New York State, provide students with opportunities to study liberal arts, sciences, and professional programs. The college also offers five graduate programs: Aviation Management, Clinical Trials Management, Pharmaceutical Science and Business, Physician Assistant, and Social Work.
Located in Queens, the most ethnically diverse county in New York State, the college enrolls 7,000 students from over 95 nations. Nine out of ten students are members of a racial/ethnic minority group, and more than half of undergraduates are the first in their families to pursue higher education.
The 50-acre campus encompasses seven buildings, including science and computer labs, music and television studios, a Performing Arts Center, and a Physical Education Center. It recently completed seven major constructions projects, with more scheduled for the future. In addition, its neighborhood is at the center of a renaissance fueled by economic revitalization.
York College of The City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the Health Professions Department with an expertise in Health Informatics/Data Science to begin Fall semester 2023. The successful candidates will be required: to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate and/or graduate courses in health science and health informatics; to conduct research in the field; to seek grant funding; and have a broad knowledge of computer science and should have good teaching skills. In addition to Health Science, the successful candidate will actively work with other departments such as Biology, Business, Chemistry, Math and Computer Sciences to develop collaborative research programs and build up an interdisciplinary data science curriculum.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in and commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and the ability to develop and maintain an active research program supported by external funding. QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree from an accredited institution; or a master’s degree from an accredited institution and evidence of current enrollment in a doctoral program
- Holds a current Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Proven organizational skills with attention to detail
- The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of both information technology and the healthcare environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- The ideal applicant will have a doctoral degree or be enrolled in a doctoral program in Health Informatics, Computer Science, Data Science, Public Health, or a closely related field. Applicants with health informatics training in allied health disciplines such as healthcare administration, public health, and biostatistics are encouraged to apply. Candidates must also demonstrate knowledge and experience in teaching, student advising, and curricular development. In addition to teaching courses in healthcare informatics and health science, the successful candidate will actively work with other departments in the initiative to develop collaborative research programs and build up an interdisciplinary data science curriculum.
Additionally, the successful candidate will:
- Be qualified to teach courses in health informatics courses.
- Be effective in teaching methods for assigned courses.
- Assist students with course advising and individual mentoring.
- Experience in a distance/online learning environment with adult learners
- Experience with course development and revision
- Experience establishing partnerships with appropriate sites for student placement in a professional practice experience
- Coding Clinical Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Professional (CPC)
- Experience with CAHIIM accreditation standards and foundational competencies

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.
After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.
If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.
Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
The position is hybrid and requires some on-site work and is subject to change.
The salary range for this appointment is $79,188 - $90,375.
