Immigration/General Assignment Reporter

The Miami Herald
Miami, FL Full-time
Posted on March 12, 2019
Brief Description
The primary focus of this reporting position is covering the immigration beat in one of the most diverse and immigrant-intensive communities in the country.  The secondary aspect of the job is general assignment reporting.  In Greater Miami, more than half the adults were born in another country.  Immigration is an everyday experience in South Florida.

Description
The beat will examine the life of immigrants in South Florida, those shut out due to policy changes and stuck in limbo due to ongoing crisis in the homelands. It also will paint a portrait of the real effects of change in a nation of immigrants.
For the immigrants themselves, that will include looking at effects of an immigration policy in flux, as well as the anxieties and coping strategies created by that, from the fake-marriage industry to how (or if) an illegal immigrant can claim asylum. What does it feel like to live in a country where you might not be able to stay, a country that, it must seem like much of the time, doesn’t want you? And how might an immigrant try to remedy the situation through the system, what options exist?
The rest of the community, too, feels the effects of immigration and policy changes. What sort of jobs do recent immigrants hold? What happens if they stop coming, or are sent back? If the labor supply for South Dade agriculture shrinks, what happens to that industry and the people it supports?
General assignment reporting is also a component of this job.
