Job Description
PURPOSE:
The Port of Seattle is committed to developing high-quality Operating Engineer Journeymen via the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Apprenticeship program. The successful Apprentice must be able to commit four (4) years to the program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Under the guidance and supervision of skilled Journeymen Operating Engineers, the Apprentice will learn the operations and maintenance of boilers, air compressors, pumps, refrigeration units, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, HVAC systems, domestic water system and Industrial Waste Water Treatment System via on-the-job training. In addition, the Apprentice will learn how to operate stationary and portable power tools as well as welding and soldering equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Must have basic knowledge of mechanical repair and maintenance.
Must have basic hands-on mechanical skills in areas of machining, hand and power tools, and HVAC fundamentals. Must be willing to learn new practical skills from all Journeymen Operating Engineers. Must have basic computer skills.
Must have the ability to read and understand basic drawings and technical manuals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Combination of education and experience demonstrative knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:
- High School diploma or equivalent;
- Must be flexible with his/her work schedule in order to complete the required curriculum of the Western Washington Stationary Engineers Joint Apprenticeship Training program (Training takes place at the Stationary Engineers Training Center in Auburn, Washington and at Renton Technical College; and
- Must complete eight hours of academic training per week and keep his/her work progress record book current.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous exposure to HVAC systems, plumbing, mechanical construction practices, conveyor system experience, metal fabrication and blueprints.
Work Environment
Will generally work in all types of environments. This includes boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, public areas, and offices. This position may, at times, require working on ladders, high areas, manholes, inside tanks and boilers, and outside in all types of inclement weather.
Additional Details
This position and is expected to last no longer than four (4) years.
Weekly Standard Hours:
Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., but may be subject to change. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week). Shift will be rotated as needed, based on needs of operational skills on the various shifts.
This is a seven day a week and twenty-four hour a day facility. Normal work schedule will vary. Must be able and willing to work any and all assigned shifts, including weekends. Will be required to work during emergencies.
Overtime Eligible:
This position is eligible for overtime pay.
Safety Requirement:
Must comply with all Aviation Maintenance work rules, shop safety requirements, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
Driver’s License Requirement:
A valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required.

Security Requirements
AV: The successful candidate must pass a Transportation Security Administration background check. Will also be fingerprinted for a criminal history background check with the FBI. Hire date will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge., PD: This position will require access to Port of Seattle Police Department offices, vehicles and computers. In compliance with State and Federal Laws, the successful candidate must pass a state/national criminal history background check.
