Job Responsibilities and Duties:

The interior designer reports to senior level interior designers. Responsibilities include: research and analysis: research and analysis of the client's goals and requirements; development of documents, drawings and diagrams that outline those needs. Interact with the design team and assist team on multiple projects simultaneously. Planning: based on direction from senior staff, formulate preliminary space plans and two- and three-dimensional design concept studies and sketches that integrate the client's needs and are based on knowledge of the principles of interior design and theories of human behavior. Confirmation: confirm that preliminary space plans and design concepts are safe, functional, aesthetically appropriate, and meet all public health, safety and welfare requirements. Selection: select colors, materials and finishes to appropriately convey the design concept, functional, life-cycle performance, environmental, and safety requirement. Management: handle the interior design resource library and maintain vendor contacts for interior furnishings, fixtures and finishes. Furniture and fixtures: for review, select and specify preliminary furniture, fixtures, equipment and millwork, including layout drawings and detailed product description; and provision of contract documentation to facilitate pricing, procurement and installation of furniture. Specifications and schedules: for review, prepare draft specifications and schedules with accurate product information for all furniture, plumbing, appliances, lighting and finishes. Construction documents: prepare construction documents, consisting of plans, elevations, details and specifications, to illustrate non-structural and/or non-seismic partition layouts; power and communications locations; reflected ceiling plans and lighting designs; materials and finishes; and furniture layouts. Regulations: preparation of construction documents to adhere to regional building and fire codes, municipal codes, and any other jurisdictional statutes, regulations and guidelines applicable to the interior space. Collaboration: collaboration with other design professionals who may be retained to provide consulting services, including but not limited to architects; structural, mechanical and electrical engineers, and various specialty consultants. Observation and reporting: observation and reporting on the implementation of projects and punch list items while in progress and upon completion, as a representative of and on behalf of the client. Administration: for review, prepare draft project proposals, costs, and fee analysis; review project billing.

Education and Experience Requirements: 

The minimum academic requirement is:

  • Bachelor degree or higher in architecture, interior architecture, interior design or closely related field.
  • 1 year interior design experience. Experience must include:
    • Preparation of construction documents including partition layouts, power plans, reflected ceiling plans, furniture plans.
    • Creating full construction set of drawings including plans, elevations, details and specifications for supervisor review.
    • Construction administration including revision of shop drawings, purchase orders and finish sample submittals.
    • Use of high level of mathematics and physics to identify and solve engineering problems.
  • Competency in the following as demonstrated by letters from prior employers or other credible documentation: autocad, sketchup, spexx, ms office & adobe programs; design technics including knowledge in concrete and reinforced concrete constructions.
