The Kansas Humanities Council is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to promoting the public humanities. We are a program creator, grant-maker, cultural leader, convener, resource provider, partner, and much more. We are seeking a dynamic Director of Programs who is a team player, dependable, a smart, expansive thinker who values working with people with points-of-views and experiences different from her/his own, and has the ability to think through projects from start to finish. The Director of Programs must enjoy working with a small staff in a historic building downtown Topeka. The ideal candidate will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations with strong critical thinking, written and verbal communication, administrative, and organizational skills.

Purpose: To create, implement, and manage statewide humanities initiatives for the general public.

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience. Health insurance is provided at time of employment. Dental insurance is available as an employee-paid option. After a year's employment, a tax-deferred pension plan is available.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: The work of the Director of Programs is centered in three key areas:
1) Manage existing statewide adult public humanities programs
2) Develop new and emerging statewide public humanities programs for an out-of-school audience
3) Write publications, blog and e-news. Examples of Kansas Humanities Council public humanities programs include the Talk About Literature in Kansas book discussions and the Poet Laureate of Kansas poetry discussions. Emerging public humanities programs include, but are not limited to, a program exploring contemporary immigration stories through neighborhood narratives and the creation of volunteer-driven "pop up" humanities opportunities.
Current writing responsibilities anchor our substantive work in smart, friendly and accessible ways through three published newsletters yearly, twice-monthly e-newsletters, and regularly scheduled blog updates.
Requirements: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Proficient with Mac products. Demonstrated database management skills, ideally experience with FileMaker Pro. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and traverse flights of stairs. Ability to sit for extended periods of time. Ability and willingness to travel and work evenings, as needed. Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Organized and detail-oriented. Attention to detail and high level of accuracy. Ability to successfully manage multiple projects with varying deadlines.
Education and/or equivalent experience:
Preferred Qualifications: A master's degree in a humanities discipline with at least two years of relevant public programming experience.
Minimum Qualifications: A master's degree in a humanities discipline or a bachelor's degree in a humanities discipline with three years of relevant public program experience.
The Kansas Humanities Council is a nonprofit cultural organization that connects communities with history, traditions, and ideas to strengthen civic life. Formed in 1972, KHC is governed by a 21-member Board of Directors and employs a staff of 5 full-time and 1 part-time positions.
