About the Unit:
The Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment (CCEE) leverages programs and services focused on advocacy and direct student support to strengthen equity and inclusion at George Mason University. The Center is committed to co-creating an equitable campus climate and society by providing intersectional and healing-centered programs, services, and support that elevate consciousness rooted in culture, healing, and liberation. Our services foster opportunities for identity development, intersectional student support, and cross-cultural engagement through coalition building and advocacy. We serve as an on-campus haven for students of color to be seen, and valued, and obtain a sense of belonging and liberation at Mason and in the world. Additionally, CCEE is a resource to those in the Mason Community who seek to raise their consciousness and meaningfully engage with people with different identities and intersections to co-create an equitable campus environment.
About the Position:
The Assistant Director of Programming is responsible for the management of student-focused curricular and co-curricular programs and initiatives that have a specific charge towards narrative change and the academic, identity, social, and cultural development of students at various social locations. This position works collaboratively and cross-functionally to achieve the goals of the unit and reports to the Associate Director for Programming. The Assistant Director is also expected to maintain active in the engagement of students on campus.
Position responsibilities are broken out into three primary categories; Intersectional Student Support, Supervision, and Communications and Storytelling.
Intersectional Student Support:
- Establish, implement, and deliver diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural development, and social justice programs (e.g. Diversity Summit, Heritage Month programming, etc.) to celebrate and affirm students’ cultures, enhance cultural humility and cross-cultural dialogue between students to learn from one another and to recognize the diversity of experiences and cultures that exist within the University community, surrounding communities and globally;
- In collaboration with the Associate Director, collect and use enrollment, campus climate, and retention data to identify, develop, and coordinate comprehensive educational and cultural success initiatives to support and address the intersectional needs (academic, social, emotional, etc.) of students at various social locations;
- Deliver individual coaching and mentorship to department affiliated student groups that foster wellbeing and belonging that contribute to students’ progression and timely completion of educational goals (e.g., leadership and advocacy opportunities in and outside of the classroom, community service opportunities, mentors on campus and community, etc.); and
- Develop annual program outcomes, evaluations, and reporting for programming portfolio, including remaining informed on relevant national, local, and campus-wide trends and needs for identified student populations.
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise 10-15 student ambassadors and 2 graduate professional assistants;
- Provide leadership and guidance to student staff that encourages growth and supports their holistic wellbeing. This includes facilitating leadership development, team-building activities, and supporting the creation and implementation of student-led initiatives; and
- In collaboration with the Associate Director, manage the programming budget and student staffing for above portfolio, including purchasing supplies, monitoring work hours for staff, expense reporting, and solidifying external funding.
Communications and Storytelling:
- Curate, produce and edit stories across media formats to tell the lived experiences of communities of color at GMU, the impact of programs, and trainings;
- Develop anecdotes and data to tell stories that exemplify CCEE’s mission and University strategic direction around diversity, equity, and inclusion;
- Contribute to the development of an integrated storytelling plan, thinking strategically about the roles of marketing communications: website, office marketing around campus, and social media; and
- Coordinate the design of program marketing flyers, departmental promotional material, and respond to community members queries and comments across media outlets.
- Master’s degree in related field or a combination of education and experience equivalent to an advanced degree;
- Knowledge of equity and social justice related issues facing students at various social locations and intersections;
- Demonstrated knowledge of developing sustainable diversity, justice, and equity programs and initiatives;
- Demonstrated ability to work with multiple stakeholders at all levels of the organization and to be adaptable, engaging and empathetic;
- Demonstrated ability to work with a myriad of communities, identities, backgrounds and cultures to effectuate community belonging, inclusion and justice; and
- Experience typically obtained within one year with Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion initiatives and programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of developing program and learning outcomes;
- Ability and desire to serve as a strong advocate and coalition builder, particularly with a range of diverse communities including students, faculty and external vendors;
- Ability to create assessments and evaluations;
- Ability to be reflective and think abstractly about lived experiences, to reflect on one’s identity, approach, and practice and recognize the impact power and privilege can have on one’s perspectives and actions; and
- Experience working with Diversity, Equity, Justice and Inclusion initiatives and programs.
