Organizational Unit Overview:
Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.
The Enterprise Storage Team is responsible for the evaluation, implementation, monitoring, maintenance, and management of all components of NAS storage, SAN-attached storage, SAN switches, and the Enterprise Backup Environment. The infrastructure supports the entire campus and is a critical component in the broader ITCS services delivery.
Job Duties:
This position is responsible for the day-to-day management and support of the university's enterprise storage infrastructure including storage area networks, block storage arrays, and network attached storage and related equipment and applications. Responsibilities include troubleshooting and resolving simple and complex problems; installation, configuration; testing and documentation of software/hardware issues and resolutions. The position will collaborate and consult with internal and external resources offering technical expertise and recommendations.
- Monitor storage systems' hardware, security, and other logs to identify system anomalies, errors and failures.
- Replace failed hardware components alone or with assistance from team or vendors as needed.
- Monitor system performance and operating parameters.
- Install, configure, and support system software and firmware updates.
- Configure and monitor backups, resolving failures when needed.
- Follow ITCS change management process.
- Harden systems per security best practices and monitor overall system security.
- Maintain current documentation for supported systems to assist team members with on-call support.
- Provide level-1 storage support to the university community by working assigned helpdesk tickets, resolving if possible and escalating when unable to resolve.
- Function as a technical resource for both ITCS and Distributed IT staff.
- Troubleshoot and resolve routine, non-routine and occasionally complex internal technical problems.
- Document support issues and resolutions.
- Assist with root cause failure analysis to understand underlying issues and implement solutions to prevent future occurrences.
- Recommend methods of resolving problems to team analysts or client representatives.
- Develop, and maintain a high level of technical understanding for team supported systems.
- Demonstrate the ability to think independently, research, interpret and apply technical knowledge to bring new ideas into focus when evaluating software and hardware.
- Conduct independent research and make recommendations to improve the reliability, performance, and security of environment.
- Utilize project management software and methodologies to update projects.
- Participate in short and long-term projects of varying degrees of size and complexity.
- Maintain accurate project documentation, timelines, and project priorities.
- Provide frequent status updates, ensuring projects are completed according to schedule.
- Maintain a good understanding of the industry and how that may impact customers.
- Consult with customers to understands needs and requirements.
- Build on-going partnerships with customers and relay information regarding resolution plans.
- Interpret complex technical information and translate that into layman's term for customers.
- Understand and present the viability of alternative solutions to clients, team and management.
- Represent the team at conferences or during customer tours.
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with employees at all organizational levels.

This position requires the employee to domicile within a reasonable commutable distance of the ECU main campus. “Reasonable commuting distance” is defined as a location that does not exceed a distance that can be safely traveled in two hours by automobile under average conditions of traffic, weather, and roads to employee's assigned duty station in Greenville, NC.
The standard work schedule for this position will need to be adjusted to meet the position requirements, which include and are not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.
This position's job duties require periodic on-call responsibilities, which will require the employee to be onsite (at a minimum) during defined business hours, as well as maintain the ability to quickly engage and work remotely weeknights and weekends and also maintain the ability to rapidly report to the site(s) after hours and on weekends if called to do so.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
- Master's degree
- Minimum of 2 years of experience supporting enterprise information technologies.
- Experience providing IT customer support using an enterprise ticketing system.
- Knowledge of enterprise-class storage array practices and usage.
- Knowledge of enterprise-class switching practices and usage.
- Knowledge of enterprise-class servers practices and usage.
- Knowledge of common storage network protocols.
- Knowledge of practices for providing data access to end users via network shares.
- Knowledge of backup/archive/restore concepts and associated software and hardware.
- Knowledge of IT infrastructure management and monitoring software, tools and utilities.
- Knowledge of datacenter topology, performance and high-availability best practices for both physical and virtual server environments
- Knowledge of LAN concepts and troubleshooting
- Training: Relevant certification preferred
