Supervisor of Clinical Genetics
Job Duties:
Evaluate and determine overall staffing needs working with admin on ongoing needs assessment. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training new genetic counselors/interns/support staff. Coordinate necessary education/training for new staff. Evaluate performance and make recommendation for personnel actions. Respond to employee questions and provide guidance on how to proceed. Facilitate team functioning with daily comm with counselors to address individual concerns and prioritize workflow. Communicate and implement administrative processes by directing genetic counseling and support staff in collaboration with physicians, the Dir of Clinical Genetics, and Administration. Conducts regular meetings with staff to foster collaborative group decision-making and solicit input regarding service operations. Assist with patient triage, prioritize, and assign cases and/or clinical research assignments to counselors and visiting students. Coordinate conference and vacation schedules. Participate in or leads efforts to develop and implement new programs. Initiate and identify need for new programs and solicit input and involvement from staff members within and outside Clinical Genetics. Collaborate with the team for the program implementation, maintenance, and follow-up. Identify, synthesize, organize, and summarize pertinent medical, genetic information, and scientific literature for effective use in clinical genetic counseling. Conduct in-depth, cancer-focused medical history intake during session. Review and expand patient pedigree. Analyze and interpret information according to clinical guidelines to generate differential diagnosis, risk assessment and proposed genetic testing strategy. Communicate family history assessment and risk information, explain cancer screening and risk-reducing surgery recommendations according to clinical guidelines, and assess patient competency/understanding in response to medical info. given. Offer patient appropriate commercial or research genetic testing, arrange sample collection, track patient status and coordinate results disclosure. Explain potential benefits, risks, and limitations of hereditary cancer genetic testing. Write consultation summaries for every patient interaction, submits timely notes according to Baptist Health policies. Utilize Progeny for clinical data keeping. Propose case management plans for patients. Respond to telephone inquiries from established patients, family members and medical providers regarding medical management recommendations and updates in medical/family history. Identify and access appropriate local, regional, and national support resources and services relevant to hereditary cancer. Abide to code of ethics by BHSF and the National Society of Genetic Counselors. Demonstrate service behaviors and principles defined by the mission and vision of the Miami Cancer Institute and Clinical Genetics. Enhance professional growth through coursework, seminars, journal clubs, and other reading material. Attend local and national educational meetings to keep abreast of current developments in cancer genetics. Participate in the clinical training of genetic counseling interns, other visiting scholars and new genetic counseling staff. Contribute to development of and administration of IRB approved research studies. Collaborate with clinical research staff within the Miami Cancer Institute to determine eligibility of potential participants in research studies.
Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling, Human Genetics or related field from a genetic counseling program accredited by the ACGC.
- 2 years of experience in same or related occupation.
- Board eligible or certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
- State of Florida Genetic Counselor license (Temporary or Full License)
